      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the sacred and intricate world of Renaissance polyphony with Pierre de la Rue's "Missa De Feria & Missa Sancta Dei genitrix." This exquisite album, released in 1998 by Hyperion, showcases the masterful compositional skills of Pierre de la Rue, a leading figure of the Franco-Flemish school of the Renaissance. The album features two complete masses, each a testament to de la Rue's ability to weave complex vocal lines into a tapestry of sound that is both intellectually stimulating and spiritually uplifting.

The "Missa De Feria" and "Missa Sancta Dei genitrix" are performed by the renowned Gothic Voices, conducted by Christopher Page, with Shirley Rumsey and Christopher Wilson contributing to the rich choral texture. The album spans a total of 14 tracks, with a duration of 1 hour and 5 minutes, providing a comprehensive exploration of de la Rue's sacred music. The album opens with the "Missa De Feria," a setting of the ordinary of the mass that is both solemn and introspective, followed by the more celebratory "Missa Sancta Dei genitrix." The album also includes several motets, such as "O Domine, Jesu Christe" and "Regina celi," which offer further insight into de la Rue's compositional style and his deep understanding of sacred text.

The album is a stunning example of medieval choral music, showcasing the intricate polyphony and harmonic richness that characterize the Renaissance period. The performances by Gothic Voices are marked by their clarity, precision, and expressive depth, bringing de la Rue's music to life in a way that is both historically informed and deeply moving. Whether you are a seasoned fan of medieval music or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The album is a testament to the enduring power of sacred music to inspire and uplift, and a reminder of the timeless beauty of the human voice.

      About Pierre de la Rue

Pierre de la Rue, born around 1460, was a renowned Franco-Flemish composer and singer of the Renaissance, celebrated for his significant contributions to the polyphonic style that flourished in the Netherlands around 1500. A contemporary of the legendary Josquin des Prez, de la Rue's music was highly prized at the Habsburg-Burgundian court, where he served as the pre-eminent composer under Duke Philip 'the Fair' of Burgundy. His compositions, which include the influential 'Missa pro defunctis' — one of the earliest polyphonic settings of the requiem — showcase his mastery of choral and sacred music. De la Rue's work is a testament to the rich musical heritage of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, making him a pivotal figure in the history of Renaissance music.
