      Album Details

Dive into the rich tapestry of French music with Charles Koechlin's captivating album, a blend of his own compositions and a notable piece by Claude Debussy. This album showcases Koechlin's mastery of chamber music, featuring his "20 Chansons Bretonnes, Op. 115," a collection of French folk songs elegantly arranged for cello and piano, and his "Cello Sonata, Op. 66," a work that demonstrates his unique voice in the classical tradition. The album is completed by Debussy's renowned "Cello Sonata," adding a touch of impressionistic charm to the collection.

The "20 Chansons Bretonnes" offer a journey through the folklore of Brittany, each song telling a story steeped in the region's history and mythology. Koechlin's arrangements bring out the lyrical beauty and rhythmic vitality of these traditional tunes, making them accessible and enjoyable for both classical aficionados and those new to the genre.

Koechlin's "Cello Sonata, Op. 66," performed here by cellist Peter Bruns and pianist Roglit Ishay, is a testament to the composer's skill in crafting intricate and expressive works for the cello. The sonata's three movements, from the contemplative "Prologue" to the lively "Final," showcase the full range of the cello's expressive capabilities.

The album is rounded out by Debussy's "Cello Sonata," a work that exemplifies the composer's innovative approach to harmony and form. This performance, also by Bruns and Ishay, is a highlight of the album, offering a fresh perspective on this well-known piece.

Recorded in 2006 and released by Hänssler Classic, this album is a treasure trove of French chamber music, performed by two of the most respected musicians in the field. Whether you're a fan of Koechlin's music or new to his work, this album offers a rewarding listening experience, showcasing the composer's unique voice and his deep connection to the French musical tradition.

      About Charles Koechlin

Charles Koechlin was a French composer, teacher, and musicologist who navigated the musical currents of the late 19th and mid-20th centuries with a deeply personal and independent style. Born in Paris in 1867, Koechlin's eclectic compositions blend Romanticism, Impressionism, and Orientalism, reflecting his diverse influences and passions. A pupil of Gabriel Fauré, Koechlin's music is known for its complexity and innovation, often featuring bitonality and near-atonality. His works span a wide range of genres, including symphonies, operas, songs, and chamber music. Among his notable compositions are "Les Heures persanes," a set of piano pieces inspired by Pierre Loti's novel "Vers Ispahan," and "The Seven Stars Symphony," a seven-movement symphony dedicated to popular film stars of the 1930s. Koechlin's extensive body of work, though not widely published during his lifetime, has left a lasting impact on French music. His influence extended beyond his compositions to his teaching, as he mentored many younger composers, including members of the influential group "Les Six." Koechlin's passion for music was matched by his enthusiasm for various other interests, from medieval music and the works of Rudyard Kipling to film stars and outdoor pursuits. His legacy endures as a pioneer of polytonality and a master orchestrator, celebrated for his unique voice in the world of classical music.
