      Album Details

Aaron Jay Kernis, an acclaimed American composer, presents a captivating journey through minimalist music with his album "Kernis: Coloured Field; Still Movement with Hymn." Released in 1996 under Decca Music Group Ltd., this album is a testament to Kernis' ability to blend intricate compositions with evocative melodies, creating a soundscape that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.

The album features two main works: "Coloured Field," a concerto for cor anglais and orchestra, and "Still Movement with Hymn," a composition for piano quartet. "Coloured Field" is divided into three movements, each exploring different themes and moods, showcasing Kernis' mastery of orchestration and his ability to create a rich, textured soundscape. The concerto is notable for its prominent use of the cor anglais, an instrument known for its haunting, expressive sound.

"Still Movement with Hymn," composed in 1993, is a single slow movement that unfolds in three large sections, each with its own distinct theme. The piece culminates in an extended coda, providing a sense of resolution and closure. This composition is a prime example of Kernis' minimalist style, characterized by its repetitive patterns, gradual changes, and a focus on the subtle interplay of sounds.

With a total runtime of 1 hour and 11 minutes, the album offers a substantial exploration of Kernis' musical vision. The performances by Alastair Neale and Christopher O'Riley, among others, bring Kernis' compositions to life with sensitivity and precision, highlighting the intricate details and emotional depth of the music.

"Kernis: Coloured Field; Still Movement with Hymn" is a compelling addition to the minimalist genre, offering both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers to the genre a rich and rewarding listening experience. It's a showcase of Aaron Jay Kernis' unique voice and his significant contributions to contemporary classical music.
