      About Karl Leister

      Karl Leister, born in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, on June 15, 1937, is a legendary figure in the world of classical clarinet music. His journey began at a tender age, learning the clarinet from his father, who was also a clarinetist. This early foundation set the stage for a remarkable career that would span decades. Leister studied at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and, as a teenager, was already making waves as a clarinet soloist with the Komische Oper Berlin under the guidance of Václav Neumann and Walter Felsenstein. His tenure as the principal clarinetist in the Berlin Philharmonic from 1959 to 1993 cemented his status as one of the greatest clarinetists of his generation. Leister's performances are celebrated for their technical virtuosity and emotional depth, making him a beloved figure in the realm of chamber music. His discography, featuring works with the Berliner Philharmoniker and other esteemed ensembles, is a testament to his enduring legacy and influence in the classical music world.
