      Album Details

This album, released on October 1, 1992, under the ECM New Series label, is a captivating exploration of chamber music, featuring the extraordinary talents of Kim Kashkashian. The album showcases two significant works: Giya Kancheli's "Vom Winde beweint" and Alfred Schnittke's "Konzert für Viola und Orchester." The former is a poignant and introspective piece, divided into four movements, each offering a unique blend of solemnity and reflection. The latter is a virtuosic concerto that highlights Kashkashian's technical prowess and expressive depth.

The album opens with "Vom Winde beweint," a work that begins with a somber "Largo molto" and transitions through varying tempos, culminating in a majestic "Andante maestoso." This piece, with its rich orchestration and profound melodies, sets a contemplative tone for the album. Following this, Schnittke's concerto for viola and orchestra showcases Kashkashian's mastery of the instrument, with dynamic movements that range from a serene "Largo" to an energetic "Allegro molto."

Recorded in 1992 at the Beethovenhalle in Bonn, this album benefits from the exceptional acoustics of the venue and the skilled accompaniment of the Orchester der Beethovenhalle Bonn, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. The recording captures the nuanced performances of both the soloist and the orchestra, providing a rich and immersive listening experience. With a total duration of one hour and seven minutes, this album is a testament to the enduring appeal of classical chamber music and the artistry of Kim Kashkashian.
