Julian Bliss: Nielsen Clarinet Concerto, Mozart Clarinet Concerto - Julian Bliss
Julian Bliss: Nielsen Clarinet Concerto, Mozart Clarinet Concerto - Julian Bliss

      Album Details

Julian Bliss, renowned clarinetist, presents a captivating album featuring two masterpieces of the clarinet concerto repertoire: Carl Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622. Recorded live at The Sage, Gateshead in April 2014, this album showcases Bliss's exceptional artistry and technical prowess, accompanied by the Royal Northern Sinfonia under the direction of Mario Venzago.

The album opens with Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto, a work known for its complex rhythms and harmonies, which Bliss navigates with remarkable skill and expressiveness. The concerto is presented in four movements, each offering a unique exploration of the clarinet's capabilities. Following Nielsen's demanding work, Bliss transitions to Mozart's serene and lyrical Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622. This concerto, composed specifically for Anton Stadler, a close friend of Mozart, is a testament to the composer's profound understanding of the clarinet's expressive potential. Bliss's interpretation is both sensitive and nuanced, highlighting the concerto's melodic beauty and harmonic richness.

In addition to the two concertos, the album also includes two shorter works by Mozart: "Non che non sei capace, K. 419" and "Der Liebe himmlisches Gefühl, K. 119," both arranged for clarinet by Julian Bliss himself. These pieces provide a delightful contrast to the larger concertos and showcase Bliss's versatility as both a performer and an arranger.

With a total duration of just over an hour, this album offers a comprehensive exploration of the clarinet's expressive range, from the virtuosic demands of Nielsen's concerto to the lyrical elegance of Mozart's works. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, Julian Bliss's interpretation of these timeless works is sure to enchant and inspire.
