      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Joseph Jongen's chamber music with this captivating album, featuring a selection of his most exquisite works. Joseph Jongen, a renowned Belgian organist, composer, and music educator, left an indelible mark on the musical landscape of the early 20th century. Born in Luik on December 14, 1873, and passing away in Sart-lez-Spa on July 12, 1953, Jongen's compositions are celebrated for their delicate beauty and technical brilliance.

This album showcases three of Jongen's most significant chamber works: the powerful and passionate "Trio pour piano, violon, et violoncelle in B Minor, Op. 10," the lyrical and evocative "Aquarelles pour violon et piano, Op. 59," and the deeply expressive "Deux pièces en trio pour piano, violon et violoncelle, Op. 95." Each piece is performed with exceptional skill and sensitivity by the Ensemble Joseph Jongen, featuring Eliot Lawson, Mark Drobinsky, and Diane Andersen.

The "Trio Op. 10" is a tour de force, showcasing Jongen's mastery of the piano trio form with its dramatic contrasts and rich harmonies. The "Aquarelles Op. 59" offers a more intimate and introspective experience, with its delicate textures and evocative melodies. The "Deux pièces en trio Op. 95," composed in 1931, reflects Jongen's mature style, blending modal melodies and a metallic glint with his characteristic gentleness.

Recorded in 2006 and released by Fuga Libera, this album spans a duration of one hour and one minute, providing a comprehensive exploration of Jongen's chamber music. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. Allow the timeless compositions of Joseph Jongen to transport you to a world of musical elegance and refinement.

      About Joseph Jongen

Joseph Jongen, born in Liège, Belgium, in 1873, was a prolific Belgian organist, composer, and music educator whose work spans over 130 compositions. Recognized as one of Belgium's most significant composers, second only to César Franck, Jongen's music is a blend of traditional and innovative styles, influenced by his teachers Vincent d'Indy and Richard Strauss, as well as contemporaries like Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. His formal training at the Liège Conservatory and subsequent studies in Italy, France, and Germany laid a strong foundation for his career. Jongen's repertoire includes symphonies, concertos, chamber music, songs, and organ works, with his Symphonie Concertante for Organ and Orchestra being particularly renowned. As a child prodigy, he began his musical journey at the age of seven, showcasing an extraordinary precocity that would define his illustrious career. Throughout his life, Jongen's contributions to music education were significant, having taught at the Conservatoire de Bruxelles and earning the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome in 1897. His legacy endures through his finely crafted compositions, which continue to captivate audiences with their lyrical charm and dramatic power.
