      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, intricate compositions of Joseph Jongen with this captivating album, released on June 24, 2016, by CPO. Spanning a total of 1 hour and 8 minutes, this collection showcases Jongen's mastery of orchestral and organ works, featuring three of his most notable pieces: the Symphonie concertante, Op. 81, the Passacaglie et gigue, Op. 90, and the Sonata eroïca, Op. 94.

The Symphonie concertante, Op. 81, is a four-movement work that highlights Jongen's ability to blend the concertante style with symphonic depth. The first movement, Allegro, molto moderato, sets a contemplative tone, while the Divertimento. Molto vivo brings a lively energy. The third movement, Molto lento - Lento misterioso, offers a hauntingly beautiful interlude, and the final Toccata (Moto perpetuo). Allegro moderato, concludes the symphony with a dynamic and spirited finish.

The Passacaglie et gigue, Op. 90, is a two-part work that showcases Jongen's skill in creating intricate and rhythmic compositions. The Passacaglie. Assez lent opens with a slow, deliberate pace, while the Gigue. Allegro modéré shifts to a more upbeat and lively tempo.

The Sonata eroïca, Op. 94, is a solo organ piece that demonstrates Jongen's ability to create a powerful and dramatic solo work. This piece is a testament to Jongen's ability to evoke a wide range of emotions through his music.

Performed by the talented Christian Schmitt and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, under the direction of Martin Haselböck, this album is a must-listen for any classical music enthusiast. The performances are impeccable, bringing Jongen's compositions to life with precision and passion. Whether you are a longtime fan of Jongen's work or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

      About Joseph Jongen

Joseph Jongen, born in Liège, Belgium, in 1873, was a prolific Belgian organist, composer, and music educator whose work spans over 130 compositions. Recognized as one of Belgium's most significant composers, second only to César Franck, Jongen's music is a blend of traditional and innovative styles, influenced by his teachers Vincent d'Indy and Richard Strauss, as well as contemporaries like Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. His formal training at the Liège Conservatory and subsequent studies in Italy, France, and Germany laid a strong foundation for his career. Jongen's repertoire includes symphonies, concertos, chamber music, songs, and organ works, with his Symphonie Concertante for Organ and Orchestra being particularly renowned. As a child prodigy, he began his musical journey at the age of seven, showcasing an extraordinary precocity that would define his illustrious career. Throughout his life, Jongen's contributions to music education were significant, having taught at the Conservatoire de Bruxelles and earning the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome in 1897. His legacy endures through his finely crafted compositions, which continue to captivate audiences with their lyrical charm and dramatic power.
