      Album Details

John Corigliano's latest opera, "The Lord of Cries," is a gripping and unsettling masterpiece that blends the ancient Greek tragedy "The Bacchae" by Euripides with the classic gothic horror novel "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. This ambitious work, with a libretto by Mark Adamo, premiered at the Santa Fe Opera in the summer of 2021 and has since captivated audiences with its dark and haunting narrative.

Comprising 31 tracks and spanning over two hours, this album is a testament to Corigliano's compositional prowess and Adamo's evocative storytelling. The opera is divided into two acts, each filled with intense drama, lush orchestration, and chilling vocal performances. The recurring mottos, as noted by critics, add a layer of depth and cohesion to the narrative, making it a compelling listen from start to finish.

The album features the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, conducted by Gil Rose, delivering a powerful and nuanced performance that brings Corigliano's music to life. The opera's dark amalgamation of ancient and gothic themes creates a unique and unsettling atmosphere, making it a standout in the realm of contemporary American opera.

"The Lord of Cries" is a disturbing parable that has been hailed as one of the finest American operas in recent memory. Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and immersive experience that showcases the best of John Corigliano's artistic vision. Released on September 8, 2023, by Pentatone, this recording is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of classical music and dramatic storytelling.
