      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical music with Johanna Martzy's "Vol 1: Montréal Recital 1960," a captivating live performance that showcases the virtuosity of one of the most celebrated violinists of the 20th century. Recorded in 1960 at the iconic Redpath Hall in Montreal, this album offers a rare glimpse into a recital that has stood the test of time, now released by DOREMI in 2010.

Johanna Martzy, known for her technical brilliance and expressive depth, is accompanied by the accomplished pianist Leon Pommers. Together, they bring to life a diverse repertoire that includes works by Handel, Bach, Beethoven, and Bartók, among others. The album spans a rich tapestry of musical styles and periods, from the Baroque elegance of Handel's Violin Sonata in F Major to the intricate fugues of Bach's Solo Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Minor.

The recital begins with Handel's Violin Sonata in F Major, Op. 1 No. 12, HWV 370, a piece that sets the stage with its graceful Adagio and lively Allegro movements. Martzy's rendition is marked by her signature precision and emotional resonance. The program continues with Bach's Solo Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Minor, BWV 1001, where Martzy's mastery of the instrument shines through in the intricate Adagio and the spirited Presto.

Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 8 in G Major, Op. 30 No. 3, is another highlight, showcasing the dynamic interplay between Martzy's violin and Pommers' piano. The recital also includes lesser-known gems such as the Duo Concertant by Eugène Ysaÿe, a piece that highlights the duo's synergy and musical chemistry.

The album concludes with a vibrant performance of Bartók's "Román népi táncok" and Saint-Saëns' "Nocturne & Tarantella in E Minor, Op. 28," demonstrating Martzy's versatility and her ability to bring out the unique character of each piece.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 14 minutes, "Johanna Martzy, Vol 1: Montréal Recital 1960" is a testament to the enduring appeal of classical music and the timeless artistry of Johanna Martzy. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises an enriching and memorable listening experience.
