      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the sacred and profound compositions of Johann Kuhnau, a remarkable polymath and composer of the Baroque era. "Sacred Music by Johann Kuhnau," released in 1998 by Hyperion, is a captivating collection of choral works that showcase Kuhnau's mastery and contribution to the German school of the clavier. This album, spanning a duration of 1 hour and 14 minutes, offers a rich tapestry of vocal and instrumental pieces that reflect the spiritual depth and musical ingenuity of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The album features a diverse array of compositions, including symphonies, arias, chorales, and recitatives, each piece meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of reverence and contemplation. From the jubilant "Ihr Himmel jubilirt von oben" to the introspective "Tristis est anima mea," Kuhnau's works explore themes of faith, redemption, and divine grace. The performances by The King's Consort, under the direction of Robert King, bring these sacred texts to life with exquisite precision and emotional resonance.

Johann Kuhnau, a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, was not only a prolific composer but also a novelist, translator, lawyer, and music theorist. His multifaceted genius is evident in the intricate polyphony and expressive melodies that characterize his sacred music. This album provides a rare opportunity to delve into the spiritual and artistic world of a composer who played a pivotal role in the development of German Baroque music.

Whether you are a seasoned enthusiast of Baroque choral music or a newcomer seeking to explore the rich heritage of this period, "Sacred Music by Johann Kuhnau" offers a deeply enriching listening experience. Each track is a testament to Kuhnau's enduring legacy and his ability to transcend the boundaries of time and culture through the power of music.

      About Johann Kuhnau

Johann Kuhnau was a remarkable German polymath whose legacy endures primarily through his compositions, though his talents extended far beyond music. As the Thomaskantor in Leipzig for 21 years, Kuhnau wore many hats—novelist, translator, lawyer, and music theorist—all while creating a rich tapestry of choral works. Today, he is best remembered for his Biblical Sonatas, a collection of programmatic keyboard sonatas published in 1700. Each sonata vividly depicts a specific biblical story, showcasing Kuhnau's unique ability to blend narrative and music. His tenure at Leipzig was followed by the illustrious Johann Sebastian Bach, cementing his place in musical history. Despite the loss of many of his larger vocal works, Kuhnau's innovative approach to musical storytelling continues to captivate audiences and inspire musicians.
