      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Leoš Janáček's operatic orchestral suites with this captivating album, released under the Naxos label in 2009. Spanning a concise yet impactful 74 minutes, this collection showcases two of Janáček's most celebrated works: "The Cunning Little Vixen" and "From the House of the Dead."

"The Cunning Little Vixen" is a whimsical and charming suite that brings to life the antics of a clever little vixen and her encounters with the human world. The suite is arranged for orchestra by Petr Breiner, who masterfully captures the essence of Janáček's original compositions. From the playful "Modra vazka (the Blue Dragonfly)" to the lively "Svatba (the Wedding)" and the evocative "Tulakova pisen (Wanderer's Song)," each track is a delightful journey through the forest and beyond.

Contrastingly, "From the House of the Dead" offers a more somber and introspective experience. This suite, also arranged by Petr Breiner, is inspired by the harsh realities of life in a Siberian prison camp. The powerful "Overture" sets the tone, followed by the haunting "Sto (One Hundred)" and the poignant "Drahy, drahy Aljejo (Dear, dear Alyeya)." The suite culminates in the dramatic "Isaj, prorok bozi (Jesus, God's Prophet)," leaving a lasting impression on the listener.

Janáček's unique compositional style, characterized by its folk-inspired melodies and intricate rhythms, is beautifully highlighted in these orchestral suites. Whether you're a seasoned fan of chamber music or a newcomer to Janáček's work, this album offers a compelling exploration of the composer's genius.
