      About Roland Alphonso

      Roland Alphonso, affectionately known as "The Chief Musician," was a pioneering Jamaican tenor saxophonist who left an indelible mark on the world of ska and reggae. Born in Havana, Cuba, on January 12, 1931, and passing away in Los Angeles, USA, on November 20, 1998, Alphonso's career spanned decades and genres, including rocksteady, soul jazz, dub, and calypso. As a soloist, bandleader, and session musician, he was instrumental in shaping the sound of early Jamaican music. His work as a member of The Skatalites and his collaborations with other legendary artists solidified his status as a major figure in the genre. Alphonso's contributions earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album in 1997, showcasing his enduring influence and talent.
