      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Gordon Jacob's "Chamber Music with Recorder," a captivating collection of works that showcases the versatility and beauty of the recorder. Released in 2010 by Naxos, this album spans a little over an hour and features a diverse range of compositions that highlight Jacob's mastery of chamber music.

The album opens with the Suite for Alto Recorder and Strings, a six-movement piece that demonstrates Jacob's ability to blend the recorder's unique timbre with the rich textures of a string quartet. Each movement offers a distinct mood and rhythm, from the serene Prelude to the lively Tarantella. Following this suite, the Treble Recorder Sonatina and Sonata provide a delightful exploration of the recorder's expressive capabilities, with each piece offering a blend of technical virtuosity and melodic charm.

The Consort of Recorders is a standout piece, composed in 1972, where Jacob truly shines by integrating the specific qualities of the recorder sound into his music. This six-movement work ranges from the triumphant Fanfare and March to the poignant Adieu, showcasing the recorder's ability to convey a wide range of emotions.

The Variations for Treble Recorder and Piano is another highlight, featuring a series of intricate and expressive variations on a simple theme. This piece is a testament to Jacob's skill in composing for both the recorder and the piano, creating a harmonious blend of sounds that is both complex and accessible.

Finally, the album concludes with Trifles, a four-movement suite that offers a playful and lighthearted contrast to the more serious works that precede it. Each movement is named after a different type of trifle, reflecting the composer's playful and imaginative approach to music.

Throughout the album, Gordon Jacob's compositions are brought to life by the skilled performances of Annabel Knight and her ensemble. The result is a collection of music that is both technically impressive and deeply engaging, offering a rich and rewarding listening experience for anyone who appreciates the beauty and versatility of the recorder.
