      Album Details

Emil Gilels, a name synonymous with virtuosity and profound musical insight, presents a captivating album that bridges the baroque and classical eras. This release features two masterpieces: J.S. Bach's Concerto for 2 Harpsichords in C Major, BWV 1061, arranged for two pianos and orchestra, and Beethoven's monumental Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat Major, Op. 73, affectionately known as the "Emperor."

Gilels' interpretation of Bach's concerto is a testament to his technical brilliance and artistic sensitivity. The arrangement for two pianos and orchestra brings a new dimension to the baroque masterpiece, showcasing the intricate counterpoint and harmonic richness that Bach is renowned for. The three movements, from the lively Allegro to the contemplative Adagio and the spirited Fuga, are rendered with clarity and precision, highlighting Gilels' mastery of the keyboard.

The second half of the album is dedicated to Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto, a work that epitomizes the composer's heroic style and innovative spirit. Gilels' performance is nothing short of transcendent, capturing the concerto's grandeur and depth. The Allegro opens with a majestic orchestral introduction, leading to a piano entry that is both powerful and lyrical. The Adagio un poco moto is a moment of serene beauty, while the Rondo. Allegro concludes the concerto with a triumphant flourish.

Recorded in 2020 and released under the Russian Compact Disc label, this album is a must-listen for classical music enthusiasts. The sound quality is exceptional, allowing the listener to fully appreciate the nuances of Gilels' playing and the orchestral accompaniment. Whether you are a long-time admirer of Gilels or a newcomer to his artistry, this album offers a rewarding and enriching listening experience.
