      Irdische Klänge - Kurt Schwertsik

      Album Details

Kurt Schwertsik's "Irdische Klänge" (Earthly Sounds), released in 2004 under the ABC Classic label, is a captivating journey through the avant-garde and minimalist genres, showcasing Schwertsik's unique exploration of tonality and his distinctive musical irony and humor. Born in Vienna in 1935, Schwertsik studied at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts, and later became a professor of composition there. His works are known for their intricate instrumentation and transparent composition, as evident in this album.

The album features 15 tracks, with a total duration of 1 hour and 19 minutes. It opens with "Irdische Klänge, Symphonie in zwei Sätzen, Op. 37," a two-movement symphony that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The second movement, in particular, showcases a proto-Sibelian minimalism that trudges and patters through the piece, creating a fascinatingly emphatic soundscape.

Following this, the album presents "Fünf Naturstücke, Op. 45," a five-movement work that draws inspiration from natural elements such as wind, thunder, rain, water, and birds. Each movement captures the essence of its respective natural phenomenon, offering a unique auditory experience.

The album also includes "Mit den Riesenstiefeln, Op. 60," a piece that stands out for its bold and powerful sounds, and "Uluru, Op. 64," a work that pays homage to the iconic Australian landmark.

The final piece on the album is "Baumgesänge, Op. 65," a six-movement work that translates to "Tree Songs." Each movement offers a different interpretation of this theme, ranging from broad and sung to lively and aggressive, heavy, stretched, agile, and lively again.

Recorded between March and July 1995 at the Adelaide Town Hall, South Australia, "Irdische Klänge" is a testament to Schwertsik's mastery of composition and his ability to create intricate, engaging, and humorous musical landscapes. Whether you're a fan of avant-garde and minimalist music or simply looking to explore new sounds, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.
