      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the profound and serene world of Herbert Howells' choral masterpieces with this exquisite 2012 release from Hyperion. This album is a testament to Howells' enduring legacy in the choral genre, featuring a collection of his most revered works performed by the renowned Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge, under the direction of Stephen Layton.

The album opens with the evocative "A Hymn for St Cecilia," a piece that showcases Howells' ability to blend text and music into a seamless, ethereal whole. The centerpiece of the album is Howells' Requiem, a work of profound beauty and contemplation, composed in memory of his son, Michael. The Requiem is a poignant exploration of grief and consolation, with each movement offering a unique perspective on the human condition.

In addition to the Requiem, the album features two of Howells' most celebrated service settings: the Gloucester Service and the St Paul's Service. These settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are exemplars of Howells' choral writing, with their intricate polyphony and lush harmonies. The album also includes a selection of Howells' anthems and motets, each one a gem of choral craftsmanship.

Recorded in the acoustically superb surroundings of Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge, this album captures the choir's rich, blended sound in stunning detail. The performances are marked by their precision, sensitivity, and deep understanding of Howells' unique musical language. Whether you're a seasoned choral enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire. The album was recorded in July 2011 and released in April 2012. It won the Gramophone Awards 2012 and was the BBC Music Magazine’s Choral & Song Disc of the Month.
