      Album Details

"Holding It Down: The Veterans' Dreams Project" is a profound and captivating collaborative studio album by American jazz pianist Vijay Iyer and American hip-hop musician Mike Ladd, released in 2013. This album is the third installment in the duo's trilogy that delves into the nuances of American life in a post-9/11 world, specifically focusing on the experiences of veterans of color from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The album features a rich tapestry of free jazz and hip-hop, with contributions from a diverse cast of artists, including Maurice Decaul, Lynn Hill, and Pamela Z. Vijay Iyer composed most of the music, while Mike Ladd turned the dreams of seven veterans into powerful lyrics. The result is a unique blend of genres that offers a poignant and thought-provoking exploration of the veterans' experiences.

With a duration of over an hour and ten minutes, "Holding It Down: The Veterans' Dreams Project" is a deeply immersive experience. The album's seventeen tracks, each named after a veteran and their location, offer a glimpse into the dreams and realities of those who have served. From the haunting "Derelict Poetry" to the introspective "Dream of an Ex-Ranger," each song tells a story that is both personal and universal.

Released under the Pi Recordings label, this album is a testament to the power of collaboration and the ability of music to give voice to the often-unheard experiences of veterans. Whether you're a fan of jazz, hip-hop, or simply appreciate thought-provoking music, "Holding It Down: The Veterans' Dreams Project" is an album that demands your attention and respect.
