      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Paul Hindemith's "Der Schwanendreher," a remarkable concerto for viola and small orchestra, released on July 28, 2025, under the Brilliant Classics label. This album is a testament to Hindemith's mastery of neoclassical and classical piano genres, offering a unique blend of traditional and modern elements.

"Der Schwanendreher" is a three-movement concerto based on old German folk songs, each movement titled to reflect this inspiration. The first movement, "Zwischen Berg und tiefem Tal" (Slow - Moderately moved, with strength), sets the stage with a powerful and evocative opening. The second movement, "Nun laube, Lindlein, laube!" (Very quietly), provides a serene and introspective contrast. The third movement, "Variationen 'Seid ihr nicht der Schwanendreher'" (Moderately fast), concludes the concerto with a lively and dynamic finish.

In addition to the concerto, the album features "5 Stücke, Op. 44," a collection of five piano pieces that showcase Hindemith's versatility and depth. The pieces range from slow and contemplative to lively and energetic, offering a diverse listening experience.

Hindemith's innovative scoring for "Der Schwanendreher" omits violins and violas, allowing the mellow tone of the viola to stand out prominently. This unique orchestration, combined with Hindemith's distinctive compositional style, creates a sound that is both familiar and fresh.

Whether you are a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, "Hindemith: Der Schwanendreher" is an album that promises to engage and inspire. With a duration of 43 minutes, it offers a concise yet comprehensive overview of Hindemith's genius, making it a valuable addition to any music collection.

      About Paul Hindemith

Paul Hindemith, born in 1895 in Hanau, Germany, was a prolific and versatile figure in the world of classical music, renowned for his compositions, conducting, and performances on the viola. Hindemith's career spanned two continents, with significant contributions made in both Europe and the United States. He is celebrated for his advocacy of the Neue Sachlichkeit style in the 1920s, which is evident in works like his "Kammermusik" series. His compositions often featured the viola and viola d'amore, showcasing his deep connection to the instrument he played professionally. Notable works include the song cycle "Das Marienleben," the opera "Mathis der Maler," and the oratorio "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," a poignant requiem based on Walt Whitman's poem.

Hindemith's life was marked by both artistic innovation and personal resilience. He founded the Amar Quartet in 1921, touring extensively across Europe. As political tensions rose in Germany, Hindemith and his wife emigrated to Switzerland and later to the United States, where he continued to compose, conduct, and teach. Despite being denounced by the Nazi regime, Hindemith's music remained deeply rooted in his German heritage, blending tonal craftsmanship with a modern sensibility. His later years in America saw him become one of the most performed European composers, teaching composition at Yale and leaving a lasting impact on the musical landscape. Hindemith's extensive output includes operas, ballets, concertos, and orchestral works, all of which reflect his unique voice and enduring legacy in classical music.
