      Album Details

Kim Kashkashian's 1993 album "Hindemith, Britten, Penderecki: Lachrymae" is a captivating exploration of chamber music, showcasing the virtuosity of Kashkashian on the viola. Released under the ECM New Series label, this album features a compelling selection of works by three prominent 20th-century composers: Paul Hindemith, Benjamin Britten, and Krzysztof Penderecki. The album spans a concise yet impactful 50 minutes, with a tracklist that includes "Trauermusik for Viola and String Orchestra," Britten's "Lachrymae, Reflections on a Song of John Dowland, Op. 48a," and the "Viola Concerto."

Accompanied by the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester and conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, Kashkashian delivers a performance that is both technically impressive and deeply expressive. The album's chamber music genre allows for an intimate and nuanced exploration of the viola's range and emotional depth. Each piece on the album offers a unique listening experience, from the somber and reflective tones of Hindemith's "Trauermusik" to the intricate and evocative compositions of Britten and Penderecki. This album is a testament to Kashkashian's artistry and her ability to bring out the rich, complex layers of these works.
