      Album Details

Thomas Demenga's 1987 album "Heinz Holliger / J.S. Bach" is a captivating blend of contemporary and classical music, showcasing the virtuosity of cellist Thomas Demenga. Released under the ECM New Series label, this 44-minute journey features a unique pairing of compositions by Swiss composer Heinz Holliger and the timeless works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The album opens with Holliger's "Duo für Violin und Violoncello," a piece that highlights the intricate interplay between violin and cello, performed here by Thomas Demenga and Catrin Demenga. Holliger's "Studie über Mehrklänge für Oboe Solo" and "Trema für Violoncello Solo" further demonstrate the composer's innovative approach to musical expression, with Demenga delivering a masterful performance on the cello.

The second half of the album is dedicated to Bach's "Cello Suite No. 4 in E-Flat Major, BWV 1010," a cornerstone of the cello repertoire. Demenga's interpretation of this suite is both technically impressive and deeply expressive, showcasing his profound understanding of Bach's music. The suite's six movements—from the Prelude to the Gigue—offer a rich tapestry of emotions and technical challenges, which Demenga navigates with grace and precision.

Recorded at the Musica Theatre in La Chaux-de-Fonds, this album captures the essence of Demenga's artistry and the collaborative spirit between the performers. Whether you're a fan of classical music or contemporary compositions, "Heinz Holliger / J.S. Bach" is a compelling listen that highlights the enduring power of these masterpieces and the skill of their interpreter.
