      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the virtuosic world of Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst, a Moravian-Jewish violinist, violist, and composer who was celebrated in his time as one of the greatest violinists of the 19th century. This album, released on Hyperion in 2008, showcases Ernst's extraordinary technical prowess and artistic philosophy through a collection of his most renowned works for solo violin.

The album opens with the dazzling "Fantaisie brillante on Rossini's Otello, Op. 11," a piece that highlights Ernst's ability to blend virtuosic display with musical depth. The "Mehrstimmige Etüden for Solo Violin" series is a cornerstone of the album, featuring six intricate etudes that push the violin to its absolute limits. These etudes, ranging from the spirited "Rondino scherzo" to the delicate "Air de Ballet," demonstrate Ernst's compositional versatility and his deep understanding of the violin's expressive capabilities.

The album also includes the hauntingly beautiful "Elégie sur la mort d'un objet chéri, Op. 10," a piece that showcases Ernst's ability to convey profound emotion through his music. The "Grand Caprice for Solo Violin on Schubert's 'Le Roi des Aulnes', Op. 26" is another highlight, showcasing Ernst's ability to reinterpret and elevate existing musical material.

Performances by Ilya Gringolts and Ashley Wass bring Ernst's compositions to life with precision and passion, capturing the essence of his technical and artistic genius. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a captivating journey into the world of one of the most remarkable violinists and composers of the 19th century.
