Hanson: Symphony No. 1, 'Nordic' / Merry Mount Suite - Howard Hanson

      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich orchestral works of Howard Hanson with his Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 21, affectionately known as the "Nordic," and the enchanting Merry Mount Suite. Released on August 23, 2000, this album is a testament to Hanson's mastery of classical composition, offering a captivating journey through his vivid musical landscapes.

The album opens with the powerful Symphony No. 1, a piece that showcases Hanson's ability to blend Nordic influences with his distinctive American style. The three-movement symphony is a tour de force of emotional depth and orchestral brilliance, from the solemn and forceful opening to the tender simplicity of the second movement and the fiery energy of the finale.

Following the symphony, the Merry Mount Suite transports you to a world of theatrical charm and whimsy. This suite, drawn from Hanson's opera Merry Mount, includes both studio and live recordings, offering a dynamic range of experiences. The live performances, in particular, bring an added layer of energy and immediacy, making you feel as though you're part of the audience.

The album also features two standalone pieces: "Pan and Priest," a short but evocative work, and "Rhythmic Variations on Two Ancient Hymns," a fascinating exploration of rhythmic complexity and harmonic richness.

With a total runtime of 1 hour and 10 minutes, this album is a substantial and rewarding listen, perfect for those who appreciate the depth and breadth of classical orchestral music. Whether you're a longtime fan of Howard Hanson or new to his work, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.
