      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, dramatic world of Howard Hanson's "Merry Mount," a captivating orchestral work that showcases the composer's unique blend of American romanticism and narrative depth. Released in 1998 under the Naxos label, this two-hour opus is a sweeping exploration of the 1630s Massachusetts Bay Colony, where the Puritan settlers' rigid beliefs clash with the free-spirited revelry of a May Day celebration. Hanson's masterful composition is divided into multiple sections, each vividly depicting the story's unfolding drama, from the initial merriment to the tragic consequences of religious intolerance. The album features a full orchestra, bringing Hanson's intricate score to life with a rich tapestry of sound. "Merry Mount" is a testament to Hanson's ability to create a compelling, character-driven narrative through music, making it a standout piece in the classical repertoire. Whether you're a longtime fan of orchestral works or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a compelling journey through a pivotal moment in American history, as seen through the lens of one of the 20th century's most innovative composers.
