Guitar Music Of Five Centuries - Narciso Yepes

      Album Details

Narciso Yepes, the renowned Spanish classical guitarist, presents a captivating journey through the evolution of guitar music with his album "Guitar Music Of Five Centuries." Released on November 1, 1982, under the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, this album is a testament to Yepes' virtuosity and his deep connection with the instrument. Spanning a mere 47 minutes, the album is a concise yet comprehensive exploration of classical guitar music from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

The tracklist is a diverse collection of pieces that showcase Yepes' technical prowess and musical sensitivity. It begins with traditional works like "Canson englesa. Allemande et Reprise" and "Auserlesene Lauten-Stücke," demonstrating the early forms of guitar music. The album then transitions into more complex compositions, including Vivaldi's "Violin Concerto in G Minor," arranged for guitar by Yepes himself, highlighting his innovative approach to the instrument.

Yepes also pays homage to his contemporaries with pieces like "Homenaje a Tárrega" by Manuel Ponce, a tribute to the influential Spanish guitarist and composer Francisco Tárrega. The album concludes with "Ráfaga, Op. 53" by Joaquín Rodrigo, a piece that exemplifies the romantic and expressive style of 20th-century classical guitar music.

Throughout the album, Yepes' playing is characterized by its clarity, precision, and emotional depth. His interpretations bring out the unique qualities of each piece, from the delicate nuances of the "Au clair de la lune Variations" to the lively rhythms of the "3 Morceaux de la Belle Epoque." This album is not just a collection of guitar music; it's a celebration of the instrument's rich history and its enduring appeal.

      About Narciso Yepes

Narciso Yepes, born in 1927 in Lorca, Spain, was a virtuoso classical guitarist whose name is synonymous with mastery and innovation. Often ranked second only to Andrés Segovia, Yepes' career was marked by his exceptional technique and his invention of the ten-string guitar, which he premiered with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1964. His rendition of Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" became legendary, earning him international acclaim and a devoted following. Beyond his performances, Yepes was a scholar who rediscovered and transcribed numerous works, including lute pieces by Bach. His influence extended to film soundtracks, and in the 1980s, he formed the Trio Yepes with his children, blending music and dance. Yepes' legacy endures as one of the most outstanding guitarists in classical music history, celebrated for his artistry and contributions to the instrument's repertoire.
