Guitar Concerto & Two Ballets - Paul Chihara

      Album Details

Paul Chihara's "Guitar Concerto & Two Ballets" is a captivating journey through the realms of classical and orchestral music, released on January 1, 2005, under Albany Records. This 51-minute album showcases Chihara's versatility and mastery, blending the elegance of a guitar concerto with the enchanting narratives of two ballets.

The album opens with the "Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra," a three-movement piece that highlights the guitar's expressive range and the orchestra's dynamic support. The first movement, "Con fantasia, Allegro," sets a lively and imaginative tone, while the second, "Tranquillo: Soliloquy," offers a moment of introspection. The concerto concludes with a return to the energetic and imaginative spirit of the first movement.

The second half of the album is dedicated to two ballets, "Mistletoe Bride" and "Grass." "Mistletoe Bride" is a six-part ballet that tells a story through dance and music. Each movement, from the "Prelude" to the "Epilogue," paints a vivid picture, evoking the emotions and drama of the narrative. The ballet culminates in a poignant "Epilogue" that leaves a lasting impression.

"Grass," a concerto for two double basses and orchestra, is a five-part work that explores the depths and richness of the double bass. The movements, titled "Meditation," "Chants," "Lento," "Liberamente," and "I'll Be Seeing You," each offer a unique perspective on the instrument's capabilities. The album concludes with a reflective "Coda" that ties the concerto together.

Paul Chihara's "Guitar Concerto & Two Ballets" is a testament to his compositional skill and creativity. This album is a must-listen for fans of classical music, offering a rich and diverse listening experience that showcases the beauty and power of orchestral and instrumental music.
