      About Guinga

Guinga, born Carlos Althier de Souza Lemos Escobar on June 10, 1950, in Madureira, a vibrant working-class suburb of Rio de Janeiro, is a renowned Brazilian guitarist and composer whose music transcends borders. Nicknamed "Gringo" as a child due to his fair skin, he adopted the artistic name "Guinga," a playful twist on his childhood moniker. Guinga's journey in music began at the age of 13 when he picked up the violão, teaching himself the intricacies of the instrument before delving into classical guitar studies. His compositions blend the rich tapestry of Brazilian jazz, bossa nova, and MPB, creating a unique sound that resonates with audiences worldwide. Guinga's music is not just heard; it's experienced, taking listeners on a journey through the heart of Brazilian culture. His influence extends beyond his own recordings, inspiring artists like trombonist Natalie Cressman and guitarist Ian Faquini, who pay homage to his spirit in their upcoming album. Guinga's artistry is a testament to his deep-rooted connection to his heritage and his innovative approach to music.
