      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Radu Lupu's 1973 recording of the Piano Concertos by Edvard Grieg and Robert Schumann. This classic album, released by Decca Music Group Ltd., captures the essence of these masterpieces with Lupu's exquisite piano playing, accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of André Previn. Recorded at the renowned Kingsway Hall in London, the album features two of the most celebrated piano concertos in classical music history.

The first half of the album showcases Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16, a work known for its lyrical beauty and nationalistic themes. Lupu's interpretation brings out the depth and warmth of Grieg's composition, making it a standout performance. The second half presents Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 54, a piece that exemplifies the Romantic era's emotional intensity and technical brilliance. Lupu's nuanced playing and Previn's sensitive conducting create a harmonious blend that highlights the concerto's dramatic and introspective moments.

With a total runtime of just over an hour, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, Radu Lupu's rendition of these concertos is sure to captivate and inspire. The album's remastering at 96kHz in 24-bit digital stereo ensures that every note is rendered with pristine clarity, allowing you to fully appreciate the artistry of Lupu and the London Symphony Orchestra.

      About Radu Lupu

Radu Lupu, the renowned Romanian pianist, was celebrated worldwide as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. Born and initially trained in Romania, Lupu's career took off in the late 1960s, marked by an intense publicity campaign that contrasted with his inherently reclusive nature. Throughout his life, he maintained a strong aversion to self-promotion and the commercialisation of his art, preferring instead to let his music speak for itself.

Lupu's performances were characterised by their surreal sensitivity and profound musicality. He possessed an astonishing command of structure and an ability to delve deeply into the emotional core of each piece he played. His repertoire spanned the breadth of classical piano music, and his interpretations were marked by a unique blend of technical virtuosity and emotional depth.

Despite his fame, Lupu remained a private figure, often described as enigmatic and elusive. He shunned the spotlight, focusing instead on his craft and the music he loved. His legacy endures as a testament to his artistry and the enduring power of his performances. Radu Lupu passed away in April 2022, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire and move audiences.
