Wilhelm Backhaus (1884-1969) was a German pianist and pedagogue renowned for his profound interpretations of the core classical and romantic repertoire, with a particular affinity for Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, and Brahms. Born in Leipzig, Backhaus began his musical journey at an astonishingly young age, giving his first concert at just eight years old. His career spanned an impressive six decades, during which he became celebrated for his technical virtuosity, musical clarity, and unwavering dedication to the composer's intentions. Backhaus was also a pioneering recording artist, with a discography that includes the complete Chopin Études and all 32 Beethoven Sonatas, the latter being the first complete recording of the cycle.
