      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Johann Christoph Graupner, a contemporary of J.S. Bach and Telemann, with this captivating collection of harpsichord partitas. Graupner, a prolific composer held in great esteem during his lifetime, offers a unique perspective on the Baroque era with his intricate and expressive compositions.

This album, released by Naxos in 2008, features Naoko Akutagawa's masterful performances of three of Graupner's partitas: Partita in A Major, GWV 149, Partita in C Minor, GWV 133, and Partita No. 1 in F Minor, GWV 121, "Winter." Each partita is a journey through a series of dance movements, showcasing Graupner's virtuosity and innovation.

The Partita in A Major, GWV 149, opens with a grand Praeludium and includes a lively Chaconne, while the Partita in C Minor, GWV 133, features an elegant Aria and six variations. The Partita No. 1 in F Minor, GWV 121, "Winter," is a winter-themed suite that evokes the chill of the season with its somber Praeludium and lively Bourree en rondeau.

With a total duration of 58 minutes, this album is a delightful exploration of Graupner's harpsichord works, performed with precision and passion by Naoko Akutagawa. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Christoph Graupner

Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) was a German composer and harpsichordist who, despite being one of the leading figures of the late Baroque era, remains one of its most underappreciated masters. Born in Kirchberg, Saxony, Graupner's musical journey saw him create a vast array of works, from operas to symphonies, that rivaled those of his contemporaries Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. His compositions, characterized by their intricate harmonies and expressive melodies, span a wide range of genres, including concertos, orchestral pieces, chamber music, and keyboard works. Graupner's prolific output and innovative style make him a key figure in the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era, offering listeners a rich tapestry of musical experiences that continue to captivate and inspire.
