      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich Baroque soundscape of Christoph Graupner with this captivating album, featuring two stunning overtures and a poignant cantata. Graupner, a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, showcases his mastery of the Baroque style with these works, each offering a unique blend of elegance, drama, and technical brilliance.

The album opens with two overtures, one in G Major (GWV 466) and the other in D Major (GWV 418), performed by the acclaimed ensemble Das Kleine Konzert under the direction of Hermann Max. These overtures are a delight for the ears, with their intricate compositions and lively rhythms. The G Major overture includes a charming "Air en rondeau" and a lively "Réjouissance," while the D Major overture features a graceful "Polonaise" and a playful "Villanella."

Following the overtures is the cantata "Es begab sich, dass Jesus in eine Stadt mit Namen Nain ging" (GWV 1157/37), a deeply expressive work that highlights Graupner's skill in vocal composition. The cantata is performed by a stellar cast of vocalists, including soprano Barbara Schlick, tenor Hein Meens, and bass Stephen Varcoe, each bringing their unique talents to the piece.

Recorded at the Villa Berg in Stuttgart, Germany, this album benefits from excellent acoustics and top-notch production, ensuring that every note and nuance is captured with clarity and precision. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rewarding listening experience that showcases the enduring appeal of Graupner's music.

      About Christoph Graupner

Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) was a German composer and harpsichordist who, despite being one of the leading figures of the late Baroque era, remains one of its most underappreciated masters. Born in Kirchberg, Saxony, Graupner's musical journey saw him create a vast array of works, from operas to symphonies, that rivaled those of his contemporaries Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. His compositions, characterized by their intricate harmonies and expressive melodies, span a wide range of genres, including concertos, orchestral pieces, chamber music, and keyboard works. Graupner's prolific output and innovative style make him a key figure in the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era, offering listeners a rich tapestry of musical experiences that continue to captivate and inspire.
