      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Berthold Goldschmidt's "Goldschmidt: Cello Concerto/Clarinet Concerto/Violin Concerto," a remarkable collection of concertos that showcase the composer's unique voice and the virtuosity of its performers. Released in 1997 under Decca Music Group Ltd., this album is a testament to Goldschmidt's compositional prowess and the exquisite interplay between soloists and orchestra.

The album features three complete concertos, each a distinct journey through a variety of emotions and musical landscapes. The Cello Concerto, performed by the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma, is a profound exploration of the instrument's expressive range, from the melancholic "Caprice melancolique" to the lively "Tarantella." Sabine Meyer's clarinet takes center stage in the Clarinet Concerto, offering a blend of lyricism and playfulness, particularly in the "Nocturne - Andante tranquilo" and the spirited "Scherzo finale." The Violin Concerto, with its intricate "Gigue" and triumphant "Finale," is a tour de force that highlights the violin's brilliance.

Conducted by Charles Dutoit and performed by the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, this album is a symphonic masterpiece that brings together some of the most talented musicians of the time. With a total duration of 1 hour and 6 minutes, it's an engaging and rewarding listen from start to finish. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, this album offers a rich and fulfilling experience that underscores the enduring appeal of Goldschmidt's compositions.

      About Berthold Goldschmidt

Berthold Goldschmidt (1903-1996) was a German Jewish composer who left an indelible mark on the classical music world. Born in Hamburg, Goldschmidt began his musical journey at a young age, studying piano, composition, and conducting. He honed his craft under the tutelage of Franz Schreker in Berlin, quickly gaining recognition as a rising star in German music. However, his promising career was abruptly halted by the Nazi regime, which banned his work due to his Jewish heritage. Forced into exile, Goldschmidt found a new home in England, where he continued to compose despite the challenges of being a refugee. His music, characterized by its emotional depth and rich orchestration, reflects both the turmoil of his personal history and the enduring power of the human spirit. Goldschmidt's legacy endures as a testament to the resilience of art in the face of adversity.
