      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Berthold Goldschmidt with his 2011 album, "Goldschmidt." This compelling collection showcases Goldschmidt's mastery as a composer, blending classical elegance with dramatic intensity. The album opens with a lively overture from "Komodie der Irrungen, Op. 6 (The Comedy of Errors)," setting the stage for a rich musical journey.

The centerpiece of the album is the Symphony No. 96 in D Major, also known as "The Miracle," by Joseph Haydn. Goldschmidt's interpretation brings a fresh perspective to this classical masterpiece, with each movement—from the Adagio to the Vivace assai—expertly crafted to highlight the symphony's depth and complexity.

The second half of the album delves into the dramatic opera "Beatrice Cenci." Goldschmidt's compositions for this tragic tale are powerful and evocative, with each act prelude and key scene—such as the Banquet Scene and the Prison Scene—drawing the audience into the narrative. The Nocturne from Act III is particularly haunting, showcasing Goldschmidt's ability to convey deep emotion through music.

Born in Hamburg and trained in Berlin under Franz Schreker, Goldschmidt's unique background and influences are evident throughout the album. His work on this record is a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of classical music. Whether you're a longtime fan of Goldschmidt or a newcomer to his work, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

      About Berthold Goldschmidt

Berthold Goldschmidt (1903-1996) was a German Jewish composer who left an indelible mark on the classical music world. Born in Hamburg, Goldschmidt began his musical journey at a young age, studying piano, composition, and conducting. He honed his craft under the tutelage of Franz Schreker in Berlin, quickly gaining recognition as a rising star in German music. However, his promising career was abruptly halted by the Nazi regime, which banned his work due to his Jewish heritage. Forced into exile, Goldschmidt found a new home in England, where he continued to compose despite the challenges of being a refugee. His music, characterized by its emotional depth and rich orchestration, reflects both the turmoil of his personal history and the enduring power of the human spirit. Goldschmidt's legacy endures as a testament to the resilience of art in the face of adversity.
