      Album Details

"Mater," the 2006 release from Slovakian composer Vladimír Godár, is a captivating exploration of minimalism and neoclassical styles, presented under the esteemed ECM New Series label. This 55-minute journey features seven tracks, each a testament to Godár's unique compositional voice, which blends contemporary classical sensibilities with a deep spiritual resonance.

The album opens with "Maykomashmalon," a hauntingly beautiful piece for female voice, viola, and cello, showcasing the ethereal vocals of Iva Bittová. "Magnificat" and "Uspávanky" continue the spiritual theme, with the latter being a lullaby that highlights the delicate interplay between voice and instruments. "Ecce puer" and "Stálá Matka" further delve into religious themes, while "Regina caeli" offers a moment of serene reflection. The album concludes with "Maykomashmalon (Variations)," a reimagining of the opening track that adds depth and variety to the listening experience.

"Mater" is a collaboration between Godár and a talented ensemble, including Iva Bittová, Miloš Valent, and Marek Štryncl, along with the Bratislava Conservatory Choir. The album's release on ECM Records marked a significant moment in Godár's career, bringing his distinctive sound to a wider audience beyond Eastern Europe. With its blend of contemporary and traditional elements, "Mater" is a compelling addition to any classical music collection, offering a rich and immersive listening experience.

      About Vladimír Godár

Vladimír Godár is a renowned Slovak composer whose work spans both classical and film score genres. Born in Bratislava in 1956, Godár is celebrated for his diverse and extensive musical output, which includes orchestral works, ballets, and oratorios. His compositions often blend minimalist and neoclassical styles, creating a unique and captivating sound that resonates with audiences. Godár is also known for his collaborative work with the Czech violinist and singer Iva Bittová, as well as his efforts in reviving the music of 19th-century Slovak composer Ján Levoslav Bella. Beyond his composing, Godár is an accomplished academic, contributing to historical music research through his writing, editing, and translation work. His belief in 'musical archaeology'—building upon previously laid musical foundations—is evident in his rich and layered compositions. Whether exploring Baroque influences or pushing the boundaries of contemporary classical music, Godár's work is a testament to his deep musical knowledge and innovative spirit.
