      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Russian classical music with Mark Ermler's captivating album, a celebration of the works of Mikhail Glinka. This 2010 release from Denon Records offers a comprehensive exploration of Glinka's operatic and orchestral masterpieces, performed with exquisite precision by the Symphony Orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre and the USSR State Symphony Orchestra.

The album opens with highlights from Glinka's seminal opera "A Life for the Tzar," featuring four powerful choruses that showcase the depth and drama of Glinka's compositional genius. Following this, the album delves into "Priest Kholmsky," presenting five entractes that bridge the acts of Nestor Kukolnik's tragedy, each piece a testament to Glinka's ability to evoke mood and atmosphere.

Ermler and the orchestras then turn their attention to Glinka's "Waltz Phantasy in B Minor," a piece that sparkles with romantic charm and virtuosity. The album concludes with a lively dance from Act III of Glinka's opera "Ruslan and Lyudmila," a fitting finale to this journey through the composer's diverse musical landscape.

With a total runtime of over three hours, this album is a treasure trove for fans of classical music, offering a deep dive into the works of one of Russia's most influential composers. Mark Ermler's conducting brings out the best in these performances, making this a standout release in the classical genre.
