      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the epic soundscape of Reinhold Glière's Symphony No. 3, "Il'ya Muromets," a monumental work that brings to life the legendary tales of Kievan Rus' folk hero Ilya Muromets. Composed in 1911, this program symphony is a testament to Glière's mastery of orchestration and his deep connection to Russian folklore.

The symphony is divided into four distinct movements, each depicting a different episode from the life of Ilya Muromets. From the wandering pilgrims of the first movement to the heroic deeds and eventual petrification of the titular character in the final movement, Glière's music paints a vivid picture of courage, adventure, and myth.

Recorded by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of JoAnn Falletta, this 2014 release on the Naxos label captures the grandeur and intricacy of Glière's score. The performance is both powerful and nuanced, bringing out the rich harmonies and dramatic contrasts that make this symphony a standout in the orchestral repertoire.

With a duration of just over an hour, this recording offers a substantial and engaging listening experience. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or new to the genre, Glière's Symphony No. 3 is sure to captivate and inspire. Dive into the world of Russian folklore and discover the timeless appeal of this remarkable composition.

      About Reinhold Glière

Reinhold Glière (1875-1956) was a prominent Soviet composer of German and Polish descent, renowned for his rich, melodic compositions that beautifully incorporated elements of Eastern folk music. A key figure in the development of Russian ballet, Glière's work is often compared to that of Tchaikovsky. He continued the Russian Romantic tradition, exploring exotic themes and leaving an indelible mark on the early musical landscape of the Soviet Union. Glière's contributions were widely recognized, earning him the title of People's Artist of the USSR and three Stalin Prizes. His music, spanning from the 1900s to the 1950s, remains a testament to his enduring legacy as a composer, conductor, and teacher.
