Gliere: Symphony No. 2 / Zaporozhye Cossacks - Reinhold Glière

      Album Details

Dive into the rich orchestral works of Reinhold Glière, a composer whose influence resonated deeply within the former Soviet Union. This album, released in 1991 under the Marco-Polo label, showcases Glière's Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 25, a four-movement masterpiece that spans a wide range of emotions and musical expressions. From the intense and weighty "Allegro pesante" to the lively and playful "Allegro giocoso," and the reflective "Andante con variazoni," to the energetic "Allegro vivace," each movement offers a unique journey through Glière's compositional genius.

Complementing the symphony is "The Zaporozhye Cossacks," Op. 64, a vibrant and dynamic piece that captures the spirit and bravado of the Cossack people. Conducted by Keith Clark and performed by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, this album is a testament to the skill and artistry of both the composer and the performers. With a total duration of 1 hour and 5 minutes, this album is a captivating exploration of Glière's orchestral works, offering a glimpse into the musical heritage of a region and a composer who, though less known internationally, played a pivotal role in shaping the musical landscape of his time.

      About Reinhold Glière

Reinhold Glière (1875-1956) was a prominent Soviet composer of German and Polish descent, renowned for his rich, melodic compositions that beautifully incorporated elements of Eastern folk music. A key figure in the development of Russian ballet, Glière's work is often compared to that of Tchaikovsky. He continued the Russian Romantic tradition, exploring exotic themes and leaving an indelible mark on the early musical landscape of the Soviet Union. Glière's contributions were widely recognized, earning him the title of People's Artist of the USSR and three Stalin Prizes. His music, spanning from the 1900s to the 1950s, remains a testament to his enduring legacy as a composer, conductor, and teacher.
