      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, orchestral works of Reinhold Glière with the album "Gliere: Symphony No. 1 / The Sirens." This captivating collection, released in 1984 under the Marco-Polo label, features the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Stephen Gunzenhauser. The album is a blend of Glière's early and later works, showcasing his mastery of the symphonic form and his unique compositional voice.

The album opens with Glière's Symphony No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Op. 8, a four-movement work that is a testament to the composer's ability to craft compelling, melodic lines and intricate orchestral textures. The symphony is followed by "The Sirens," Op. 33, a symphonic poem that is a vivid musical depiction of the mythical creatures from Greek mythology. The piece is notable for its lush harmonies and dramatic orchestration, which create a sense of otherworldly allure and danger.

Recorded at the Concert Hall of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in Bratislava in May 1985, the album is a testament to the skill and artistry of both the composer and the performers. The standard-size jewel case comes with a 4pp booklet that includes notes in English, providing valuable context and insights into the music.

With a duration of 48 minutes, this album is a perfect introduction to the works of Reinhold Glière, offering a glimpse into the composer's evolution and his enduring contributions to the classical music canon. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

      About Reinhold Glière

Reinhold Glière (1875-1956) was a prominent Soviet composer of German and Polish descent, renowned for his rich, melodic compositions that beautifully incorporated elements of Eastern folk music. A key figure in the development of Russian ballet, Glière's work is often compared to that of Tchaikovsky. He continued the Russian Romantic tradition, exploring exotic themes and leaving an indelible mark on the early musical landscape of the Soviet Union. Glière's contributions were widely recognized, earning him the title of People's Artist of the USSR and three Stalin Prizes. His music, spanning from the 1900s to the 1950s, remains a testament to his enduring legacy as a composer, conductor, and teacher.
