      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, orchestral tapestry of Reinhold Glière's "Symphony No. 1 & The Red Poppy," a captivating journey through the early 20th-century Russian musical landscape. This 1993 release on the Chandos label presents a compelling blend of Glière's early symphonic work and his renowned ballet suite, "The Red Poppy."

The album opens with Glière's Symphony No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Op. 8, a four-movement masterpiece that showcases the composer's lyrical gifts and mastery of orchestral color. The symphony's opening Andante - Allegro moderato sets a contemplative tone, gradually building to a spirited Allegro molto vivace. The central Andante movement offers a moment of introspection, while the Finale. Allegro brings the work to a triumphant close.

The second half of the album is devoted to "The Red Poppy," Op. 70, a vibrant suite inspired by the ballet of the same name. The suite's six movements transport the listener from the bustling streets of China to the romantic dances of the Russian sailors. Highlights include the energetic Heroic Coolie Dance, the evocative Scene and Dance movements, and the lively Russian Sailor's Dance.

Conducted by Sir Edward Downes and performed by the BBC Philharmonic, this recording captures the full breadth of Glière's orchestral palette. The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Donald Johanos, also offers a compelling interpretation on a separate recording of the same works.

With a total runtime of just over an hour, this album is a perfect introduction to Glière's music, offering a rich and varied listening experience. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "Symphony No. 1 & The Red Poppy" is sure to delight and inspire.

      About Reinhold Glière

Reinhold Glière (1875-1956) was a prominent Soviet composer of German and Polish descent, renowned for his rich, melodic compositions that beautifully incorporated elements of Eastern folk music. A key figure in the development of Russian ballet, Glière's work is often compared to that of Tchaikovsky. He continued the Russian Romantic tradition, exploring exotic themes and leaving an indelible mark on the early musical landscape of the Soviet Union. Glière's contributions were widely recognized, earning him the title of People's Artist of the USSR and three Stalin Prizes. His music, spanning from the 1900s to the 1950s, remains a testament to his enduring legacy as a composer, conductor, and teacher.
