Born on March 24, 1928, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Janis made his orchestral debut at the remarkable age of 15 with Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra. Janis was not only renowned for his commanding performances but also for his advocacy for arthritis awareness, having overcome severe arthritis himself.
