      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Roberto Gerhard's "Concerto for Harpsichord, String Orchestra and Percussion - Nonet & Concerto for Piano and Strings," a masterful blend of modern classical, chamber music, and serialism. Released on January 1, 1999, under the naïve classique label, this album is a testament to Gerhard's innovative compositional style and his ability to push the boundaries of traditional forms.

The album features three distinct works, each showcasing Gerhard's unique approach to orchestration and structure. The Concerto for Harpsichord, String Orchestra and Percussion is a dynamic and intricate piece that highlights the harpsichord's distinctive timbre against the rich backdrop of strings and percussion. The Nonet, scored for a diverse ensemble of winds and strings, is a journey through contrasting moods and tempos, from the lively Allegro maestoso to the introspective Andante. The Concerto for Piano and Strings offers a more intimate exploration of sound, with the piano taking center stage in a dialogue with the strings.

Performances by Ursula Dütschler, Albert G. Attenelle, and Lawrence Foster, under the direction of Lawrence Foster, bring these works to life with precision and passion. The album's duration of 1 hour and 8 minutes provides a substantial exploration of Gerhard's musical language, making it a rewarding listen for both new and seasoned listeners of contemporary classical music. With a rating of 3.68 out of 5 from 16 ratings, this album is a compelling addition to any classical music collection.

      About Roberto Gerhard

Roberto Gerhard, born in 1896 in Valls, Spain, was a composer whose musical journey spanned two nations and a wealth of influences. With Germanic parents, Gerhard's early musical training in his native Catalonia was marked by studies with the renowned pianist Enrique Granados and the esteemed composer Felipe Pedrell, who ignited his passion for Catalan folk music. His compositional style was further shaped by his studies with Arnold Schoenberg, reflecting a blend of Catalan tradition and modernist innovation. Gerhard's exile from Spain led him to a prolific career in Britain, where he composed for theater, radio, and film, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that continues to captivate audiences today. His works, such as the Violin Concerto, showcase his unique voice and enduring appeal. Gerhard passed away in Cambridge in 1970, leaving behind a body of work that stands as a testament to his artistic vision and cultural heritage.
