      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Renaissance polyphony with "Gabrieli Tedesco: Giovanni Gabrieli from German Sources," a captivating collection of choral masterpieces by the Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrieli. Released in 1997, this album offers a unique perspective on Gabrieli's work, drawing from German sources to present a compelling narrative of his musical genius.

The album, featuring the Musicalische Compagney under the direction of Holger Eichhorn, spans a diverse range of compositions, from intricate canzoni and sonate to grand choral works. Each piece showcases Gabrieli's mastery of counterpoint and his innovative use of spatial effects, creating a sonic landscape that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply moving.

Highlights include the majestic "Audite principes à 16," a work that demonstrates Gabrieli's ability to weave complex vocal lines into a cohesive whole, and the exultant "Exultet iam angelica turba à 14," a celebration of the heavenly host that is as uplifting as it is technically impressive. The album also features several canzoni from Gabrieli's 1615 collection, offering a glimpse into his instrumental writing and his influence on the development of the sonata form.

With a total duration of just over an hour, this album is a testament to Gabrieli's enduring legacy and his influence on the development of Western music. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast of Renaissance polyphony or a newcomer to the genre, "Gabrieli Tedesco" is sure to captivate and inspire. The album was released by CPO and is a great addition to any music collection.

      About Giovanni Gabrieli

Giovanni Gabrieli, born around 1554, was a pioneering Italian composer and organist whose work marked the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music. As a key figure of the Venetian School, Gabrieli's compositions are renowned for their grandeur and innovation, blending vocal and instrumental elements with masterful skill. Born into a family of modest means, Gabrieli's musical journey was shaped by his uncle, the esteemed composer Andrea Gabrieli, from whom he took his surname. By 1585, Gabrieli had secured prestigious roles as the organist at St Mark's Basilica and director of music at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, positions that allowed him to influence and inspire generations of musicians. His choral works, characterised by their antiphonal effects and rich textures, continue to captivate audiences and remain staples in the classical repertoire. Gabrieli's legacy endures as a testament to his enduring impact on Western music.
