      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, resonant sounds of the late Renaissance with Giovanni Gabrieli's "Gabrieli: Music for Brass and Organ." Released on Pentatone in October 2013, this album is a masterful collection of Gabrieli's sacred and instrumental works, performed by the Berlin Brass Quintet and organist Andreas Sieling, under the direction of Lucas Vis. The album spans a full hour and two minutes, featuring 18 tracks that showcase Gabrieli's innovative use of brass and organ in sacred music.

The album opens with the powerful "Canzon No. 15 a 10" and continues with a variety of canzoni, sonatas, and symphoniae, each demonstrating Gabrieli's mastery of polyphony and his ability to create dynamic, dramatic effects. Highlights include the intricate "Sonata octavi toni a 12," the haunting "Canzon in G Minor," and the lively "Sonata pian' e forte, alla quarta bassa, a 8."

Recorded in February 2013 at Berlin's Berliner Dom, this album captures the grandeur and intimacy of Gabrieli's music in stunning detail. The Berlin Brass Quintet's precise, expressive playing is complemented by Andreas Sieling's virtuosic organ performances, creating a rich, immersive sound that brings Gabrieli's music to life. Whether you're a fan of early music, brass ensembles, or the organ, "Gabrieli: Music for Brass and Organ" is a must-listen, offering a unique glimpse into the musical world of the Venetian Renaissance.

      About Giovanni Gabrieli

Giovanni Gabrieli, born around 1554, was a pioneering Italian composer and organist whose work marked the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music. As a key figure of the Venetian School, Gabrieli's compositions are renowned for their grandeur and innovation, blending vocal and instrumental elements with masterful skill. Born into a family of modest means, Gabrieli's musical journey was shaped by his uncle, the esteemed composer Andrea Gabrieli, from whom he took his surname. By 1585, Gabrieli had secured prestigious roles as the organist at St Mark's Basilica and director of music at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, positions that allowed him to influence and inspire generations of musicians. His choral works, characterised by their antiphonal effects and rich textures, continue to captivate audiences and remain staples in the classical repertoire. Gabrieli's legacy endures as a testament to his enduring impact on Western music.
