      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Friedrich Kuhlau's piano compositions with the captivating album "Friedrich Kuhlau: Sonatas, Variations & Rondos, Vol. 1." This collection, released in 2002 by NAR International, showcases the brilliance of Danish composer Friedrich Kuhlau, who was a contemporary of Beethoven and a significant figure in the Danish Golden Age of music. The album features a stunning performance by pianist Loredana Brigandì, who discovered Kuhlau's works in the Royal Library of Copenhagen, bringing these lesser-known gems to a wider audience.

Spanning a total of 1 hour and 7 minutes, the album comprises 17 tracks, including two complete piano sonatas (Op. 4 and Op. 5), a set of variations in C Major (Op. 14), and two rondos for piano in A Major (Op. 97 and Op. 113). Each piece is a testament to Kuhlau's mastery of form and expression, blending classical elegance with a distinctive Nordic charm. The sonatas, in particular, are notable for their technical demands and emotional depth, while the variations and rondos offer a delightful mix of virtuosity and melodic invention.

This album is not just a collection of beautiful piano music; it's a journey through the musical landscape of early 19th-century Denmark, offering a unique perspective on the classical repertoire. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises a rewarding and engaging listening experience.

      About Friedrich Kuhlau

Friedrich Kuhlau, born in Uelzen, Germany, in 1786, was a pivotal figure in Danish music during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Settling in Denmark in 1810, Kuhlau quickly established himself as a renowned pianist and composer, becoming a central figure of the Danish Golden Age. His most enduring work, "Elverhøj," composed in 1828, is celebrated as the first true work of Danish National Romanticism and remains a beloved piece in Danish cultural history. Kuhlau's contributions to piano music are extensive, with his Six Sonatinas, Op. 55, being particularly notable for their role in preparing students for the study of classical sonatas. His legacy endures through his diverse compositions, which continue to captivate audiences and inspire musicians today.
