      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of Girolamo Frescobaldi's "Frescobaldi: Motets and Organ Works," a captivating collection of sacred and instrumental music that showcases the genius of one of the most influential composers of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Released on July 15, 2018, under the Passacaille label, this album is a testament to Frescobaldi's mastery of both vocal and keyboard compositions.

Spanning a duration of 1 hour and 14 minutes, the album features a diverse array of pieces, including motets, toccatas, canzonas, and gagliardas. The motets, such as "Jesu Rex admirabilis" and "Ave Virgo gloriosa," are rendered with exquisite vocal harmonies, while the organ works, like "Toccata terza per sonarsi alla levatione" and "Toccata con il contrabbasso ovvero pedale," display Frescobaldi's virtuosic command of the keyboard. The inclusion of instrumental pieces like "Capriccio sopra la bassa fiamenga" and "Fantasia prima" adds a dynamic contrast to the sacred vocal works.

Performed by the talented Lorenzo Ghielmi and La Divina Armonia, this album is a meticulously crafted journey through Frescobaldi's musical legacy. Ghielmi's expertise on the organ and his nuanced direction of the ensemble bring out the rich textures and intricate polyphony that define Frescobaldi's style. The album's liner notes provide insightful commentary on the historical and musical context of each piece, enhancing the listening experience.

Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the works of Girolamo Frescobaldi, this album offers a profound and enriching exploration of the composer's contributions to the sacred and instrumental repertoire. The blend of vocal and organ works creates a harmonious balance, making it a compelling addition to any classical music collection.

      About Girolamo Frescobaldi

Girolamo Alessandro Frescobaldi, born in the Duchy of Ferrara in 1583, was a virtuoso keyboard player and one of the most influential composers of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. A child prodigy, Frescobaldi studied under the renowned Luzzasco Luzzaschi and was inspired by several notable composers of his time. His career reached great heights when he was appointed as the organist of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, a position he held intermittently from 1608 until his death in 1643. Frescobaldi's compositions for harpsichord and organ are celebrated for their technical brilliance and emotional depth, making him a pivotal figure in the development of keyboard music. His work not only defined the Italian Baroque style but also had a profound impact on the German Baroque school, solidifying his legacy as one of the first great masters of organ composition.
