      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Portuguese classical music with Luís de Freitas Branco's "Symphony No. 4 - Vathek." This captivating album, released in 2010 under the Naxos label, offers a profound exploration of Freitas Branco's compositional genius. The album is a blend of two significant works: his Fourth Symphony and the symphonic poem "Vathek," both performed by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra under the skilled direction of Álvaro Cassuto.

Freitas Branco, a prominent figure in Portuguese music history, was not only a composer but also a musicologist and professor. His works are known for their depth and complexity, and this album is no exception. The Fourth Symphony, divided into four distinct movements, showcases Freitas Branco's mastery of orchestration and his ability to convey a wide range of emotions through music. The symphony begins with a serene "Andante," gradually building to the energetic "Allegro vivace" and culminating in a powerful "Allegro."

The second half of the album is dedicated to "Vathek," a symphonic poem inspired by the novel of the same name by William Beckford. This work is divided into nine sections, each depicting a different scene or emotion from the story. From the introductory "Theme" to the final "Epilogue," Freitas Branco takes you on a journey through a world of sound, painting vivid musical pictures that bring the story to life.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 16 minutes, this album is a substantial and rewarding listening experience. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, Freitas Branco's "Symphony No. 4 - Vathek" is sure to leave a lasting impression. So, sit back, relax, and let the music transport you to another time and place.
