      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Frederick Delius with his captivating album "Hiawatha, Tone Poem for Orchestra." This 2009 release on Dutton Epoch is a testament to Delius' masterful composition skills, featuring a blend of orchestral works that showcase his unique musical language. The album opens with the title track, "Hiawatha, Tone Poem for Orchestra," a piece inspired by Longfellow's renowned poem, which was completed and recorded for the first time in 2007. This orchestral work is a highlight, lasting approximately 18 minutes and offering a rich, immersive experience.

The album also includes the "Suite for Violin & Orchestra," a four-movement piece that ranges from the serene "Pastorale" to the lively "Finale," demonstrating Delius' versatility and depth. The "Double Concerto for Violin, Viola & Orchestra" is another standout, with its three distinct movements that build from a quiet, introspective start to a dynamic, accelerating finale. The "Caprice and Elegy for Viola & Orchestra" rounds out the collection, offering a contrast of energetic and reflective moods.

Performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra under the direction of David Lloyd-Jones, with soloists Philippe Graffin on violin and Sarah-Jane Bradley on viola, this album is a must-listen for fans of classical music. The collaboration between these talented musicians brings Delius' compositions to life, creating a cohesive and engaging listening experience. With a total duration of just over an hour, this album is a perfect introduction to Delius' orchestral works or a delightful addition to any classical music enthusiast's collection.

      About Frederick Delius

Frederick Delius, born into a wealthy mercantile family in Bradford, England, was a composer who defied conventional paths. Rather than following his family's wishes to enter the world of commerce, Delius pursued his passion for music. In 1884, he was sent to Florida to manage an orange plantation, but his heart was not in the business. Instead, he immersed himself in the local music and culture, which significantly influenced his compositions. Returning to Europe in 1886, Delius dedicated himself to his true calling, creating a body of work that reflects his unique experiences and artistic vision.
