      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Frederick Delius with this captivating album, "Frederick Delius, Brigg Fair." Released on February 16, 2009, this collection showcases the brilliance of Delius's orchestral compositions, spanning a rich and varied repertoire that highlights his unique musical voice.

The album opens with the title track, "Brigg Fair," a set of variations on an English folk song collected by Delius's friend, the Australian composer Percy Grainger. This piece, subtitled "An English Rhapsody," is a testament to Delius's ability to weave traditional melodies into intricate and evocative orchestral arrangements. The folk song, which tells the story of a young man journeying to a fair to meet his sweetheart, is transformed into a lush and romantic orchestral work that captures the essence of rural England.

Throughout the album, Delius's impressionistic style shines, with pieces like "Koanga," "Hassan," and "The Walk to the Paradise Garden" showcasing his mastery of orchestration and his penchant for creating atmospheric and evocative soundscapes. "Koanga," inspired by Delius's time in Florida, blends exotic rhythms and lush harmonies, while "Hassan" draws on Middle Eastern influences to create a serene and mystical atmosphere. "The Walk to the Paradise Garden," taken from Delius's opera "A Village Romeo and Juliet," is a poignant and lyrical piece that underscores the composer's deep connection to nature and the human experience.

The album also features lesser-known works, such as "2 Pieces for Small Orchestra" and "Over the Hills and Far Away," which demonstrate Delius's versatility and his ability to create compelling music on a smaller scale. Each piece on this album is a testament to Delius's unique vision and his enduring legacy as one of the most innovative and influential composers of the early 20th century.

With a duration of just over an hour, this album offers a comprehensive overview of Delius's orchestral works, making it an essential addition to any classical music collection. Whether you're a longtime fan of Delius or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to captivate and inspire. So, sit back, relax, and let the enchanting melodies of Frederick Delius transport you to another time and place.

      About Frederick Delius

Frederick Delius, born into a wealthy mercantile family in Bradford, England, was a composer who defied conventional paths. Rather than following his family's wishes to enter the world of commerce, Delius pursued his passion for music. In 1884, he was sent to Florida to manage an orange plantation, but his heart was not in the business. Instead, he immersed himself in the local music and culture, which significantly influenced his compositions. Returning to Europe in 1886, Delius dedicated himself to his true calling, creating a body of work that reflects his unique experiences and artistic vision.
