      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the sacred and intricate world of Renaissance polyphony with Francisco de Peñalosa's "Masses," a captivating collection of sacred choral works performed by the renowned Westminster Cathedral Choir under the direction of James O'Donnell. Released in March 1993, this album showcases the profound musical legacy of Francisco de Peñalosa, a Spanish composer whose works are celebrated for their beauty and complexity.

The album features two complete masses: the "Missa Ave Maria peregrina" and the "Missa Nunca fue pena mayor," each a masterclass in Renaissance vocal composition. The "Missa Ave Maria peregrina" is particularly notable for its use of the plainchant "Ave Maria" as a cantus firmus, weaving this familiar melody into a rich tapestry of polyphonic voices. The "Missa Nunca fue pena mayor" offers a different perspective, drawing from a secular song of the same name, demonstrating Peñalosa's versatility and innovation.

In addition to these masses, the album includes the motet "Sacris solemniis," a stunning example of Peñalosa's ability to create deeply moving and spiritually resonant music. The entire collection is performed with the precision and passion that the Westminster Cathedral Choir is known for, under the expert guidance of James O'Donnell.

With a duration of just over an hour, this album is a treasure trove for lovers of Renaissance music, offering a deep dive into the sacred choral works of one of Spain's most influential composers. The album's release on the Hyperion label ensures a high standard of recording quality, allowing the intricate details of Peñalosa's compositions to shine through. Whether you are a seasoned enthusiast of Renaissance polyphony or a newcomer to the genre, "Masses" by Francisco de Peñalosa is an album that will enrich your musical journey.
