      Album Details

Florence Beatrice Price, a pioneering African-American classical composer, presents a compelling collection of her works in the album "Florence Price: The Oak, Mississippi River; Symphony No. 3." Released on August 18, 2008, under eOne Music International Classics, this album is a testament to Price's remarkable musical prowess and her unique ability to blend African-American folk traditions with classical music.

The album opens with "The Oak," a piece that showcases Price's ability to evoke vivid imagery through music. The "Mississippi River Suite" follows, offering a serene and flowing journey through the landscapes and culture of the American South. The centerpiece of the album is Price's "Symphony No. 3 in C Minor," a powerful and dramatic work that demonstrates her mastery of the symphonic form. The symphony is divided into four movements, each offering a different facet of Price's compositional style, from the contemplative "Andante" to the exhilarating "Symphony No. 3 In C Minor: Scherzo: Finale."

Performed by the Women's Philharmonic under the direction of Apo Hsu, this album is a rare opportunity to experience the works of Florence Beatrice Price, a composer whose contributions to the classical music canon have been historically overlooked. With a total runtime of 1 hour and 9 minutes, this album is a substantial and rewarding listen for anyone interested in exploring the rich diversity of American classical music.

The album was originally released in 2001 by Koch International Classics and was reissued in 2008, making it more accessible to a wider audience. Whether you're a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, "Florence Price: The Oak, Mississippi River; Symphony No. 3" offers a captivating and enriching listening experience.

      About Florence Beatrice Price

Florence Beatrice Price, born in 1888 in Little Rock, Arkansas, was a pioneering American classical composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher. She studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and made history in 1933 when she became the first African-American woman to have a symphony performed by a major US orchestra. Throughout her career, Price composed over 300 works, including four symphonies, four concertos, and a wealth of choral, chamber, and solo instrumental pieces. Her music, deeply rooted in her experiences and heritage, reflects a unique blend of African-American spirituals, Southern folk music, and European classical traditions. Despite facing numerous personal and professional challenges, including the loss of her husband in 1931, Price's compositions continue to captivate audiences and inspire new generations of musicians. In 2009, a significant collection of her works and papers was discovered, further cementing her legacy as a groundbreaking composer.
